Follow these simple steps to keep your retainers clean. Before placing your retainers back in your mouth, you should always wash them. After eating, brush your teeth and your retainers to ensure that no food particles are trapped between them.

Not at all. Removable retainers often become loose over time and fall off the teeth. Fixed retainers can also break. Whatever type of retainer you have, it is important to maintain it properly. Your removable retainers should be cleaned and made sure that they fit properly during your professional teeth cleaning visit. The lifespan of a clear retainer is generally one to three years. That of a Hawley retainer is between two and eight years.

The retainer will only have to be worn during the night for a full year. After that, you may take a couple of nights off from wearing them each week.
